Summer Races 2014

Oh how I love when we just start to get a taste of warmer weather in Minnesota. I don’t know about everyone else but once it starts getting a bit warmer outside I get very motivated to run outside again!

My motivation led me to sign up for a BUNCH of summer runs! I’ve mentioned already that I signed up for runs but I had a lot of interest in what exactly I signed up for so I thought I would share in one post!

My first run that I am signed up for is the Minneapolis Marathon RELAY on June 1st. I am running with my parents and one other person, a team of 4 people.

My next race is the Color Run 5K on July 13. If anyone would like to join me for this run I have a team started: Anytime Anywhere Any Crazy Race, our start time is 8:30am. I’m also signed up for the Bacon Chase 5K July 19th. I haven’t done this one before but honestly how could it not be awesome! Bacon!! haha Anyways if anyone is interested please sign up and spend the morning running and eating bacon with me 🙂

Next is RAGNAR!!!!!! August 15-16th. I love love love Ragnar and I am so excited for this relay run! Incase you have no idea what Ragnar is about you can check out my blog posts from last years Ragnar: 1, 2, 3 & 4. What an amazing relay this is…. this will be my second year running but my third year participating.

GreatRiver-Training

My final race that I am signed up for is the Women Rock Half Marathon on August 30th! I ran this half last summer and I am very excited and nervous to do it again! I was not prepared last summer for this race so I hope to be more prepared this summer. I also hope to be a lot lighter this time around 🙂 If anyone wants to tackle a half marathon this summer I’d love a running buddy!!!

First Nursing Job

So as you all probably know I graduated nursing school in December and passed my NCLEX  RN exam at the end of January.

I also mentioned that I had an interview for a RN position at the hospital I work at as part of their new grad program. On the same day that I found out that I passed my boards I also found out that I did not get the job.

I’m not going to lie I thought I had nothing to worry about with getting the job so I was SHOCKED when I found out I didn’t get it. They had so many internal employees apply and only had about 8 spots so I didn’t make the cut. I was super sad for a couple days but then I got over it. I always try to remember that everything happens for a reason and I must not have been meant to start there yet.

I then started applying at Home Care agencies for a RN position. On Tuesday this week I accepted my first RN job at a home care agency. They have two pediatric clients that they are going to train me to work with! I’m very excited to still be able to work with kids.

I am keeping my hospital job, I went casual meaning I only have to work once a month. My plan is to apply for the July new grad program. Hopefully I was meant to start in July 🙂

Vacation Recap: Bahamas Cruise

Usually I would do a weekend update but honestly this weekend I literally slept, ate and worked! I worked a TON of overtime this weekend.

So how about I tell you all about our vacation!

So we headed to Miami on Sunday so we could be there one day early. We arrived to 80 degree weather and sun 🙂 We were so tired from our super early flight, I layer by the pool all afternoon and Scott slept in the room. He is not a lay in the sun type…. but I met a couple nice people at the pool to hang out with.

After lounging by the pool for a few hours I headed inside so Scott and I could get ready to go find dinner. Our hotel (which we stayed in for FREE, thanks dad for letting us use your Hyatt points) didn’t really have a ton of restaurants near it but we did luck out and there was an Italian restaurant a block away.

The star of the dinner was the free bread and dipping oil! They put garlic chips in it and it was amazing!

I decided since there would be tons of eating on the cruise I’d keep it light with a salad for dinner. So good!!!

Monday morning I woke up bright and early to get in a workout 🙂

After working out I headed back to the room to pack up our stuff so we could head to the port.

Downtown Miami

Our first day on the cruise was a sailing day. We sailed all day and night towards Nassau, Bahamas. We took advantage of the sailing day to explore the boat.

Our cabin was located on deck 4. The Windjammer, which is where we got breakfast, lunch and any other time you need food was located on deck 10. The pizza place and deli was located on deck 11. The pool and ice cream was located on deck 10. Our formal dinner room was located on deck 3. The one thing that saved me from gaining weight on vacation was the fact that we took the stairs EVERYWHERE!!

The windjammer also had an amazing dessert buffet! Thank god for all the stairs we climbed.

We had a three course meal every night there; appetizer, main entree and dessert. My favorite entree was the roasted duck. It was my first time having duck and it was phenomenal.

On day two when we woke up we were in Nassau.

Scott and I booked a snorkeling excursion for the morning.

It was a beautiful sunny day and perfect for snorkeling in the freezing water 🙂 Once we were done snorkeling got to enjoy some rum punch!

We got a kick out of the captain announcing we were sailing back to the port but really all they did was put the sail up. They kept the motor running so really we were just motoring in with the sail up!

That afternoon we walked around the shops a bit. We were on a mission to find a bottle of rum for the remainder of our vacation. The alcohol of the boat was ridiculously expensive so we snuck our own alcohol of the ship 🙂 We found some Pineapple Rum to sneak on! It was very good!

We did experience about 10 minutes of rain, but the rain brought this amazing rainbow 🙂

Every evening before and after dinner they had shows and game shows to attend. Scott and I went to the shows before dinner. Our favorite show was a juggler/comedian.

Our favorite game shows were the love and marriage game show and the quest game show.

The game shows were probably my favorite activity. They were always super entertaining and funny.

On the third day we were on CocoCay, Bahamas. CocoCay is a private island owned by Royal Caribbean. We took a tender to get from the boat to the island.

They had a lunch buffet and tons of activities on the island.

IMG_1980CocoCay was my favorite stop because we just layer on the beach all day and relaxed in the sun. The water was really refreshing and so clear. There is nothing like clear Caribbean  water. We eventually had to head back to the boat though.

On the fourth day we were in Key West, Fl. Key West was full of fun shops and sights to see.

Incase your wondering the guy laying on the ground is part of the statue 🙂 I sent this pic to my dad and he asked if that was Scott laying there 🙂

Scott was on a mission in Key West to get some Key Lime Pie. We met some people on the cruise who told us where to go to get the best Key Lime Pie. Scott and I shared a slice and it was gone so fast I never got a photo! Scott means business when it comes to pie.

The sites from the boat were also awesome in Key West, crystal clear turquoise water.

Key West was a great way to end our vacation.

I think Scotts favorite part of the trip was looking out our window.

We had a great vacation. The thing I loved about a cruise is that you get to see lots of different places on 1 vacation. Scott and I both agree that we had fun but there is no rush to go on another cruise. I think that even though it was fun seeing so many places on 1 vacation I’d still rather go to a resort somewhere and then explore that one place for a week.

Weekend Update 2/10/14

Scott and I are back home…. BRRRRR I miss the warm weather, beach and ocean 🙂

My dad picked Scott and I up from the airport Friday evening. When we got home we met my parents at Bonfire for dinner. It was only my second time eating there and I don’t know why I don’t eat there more often! SOOOO GOOD!!!

Saturday I met my mom at Title Boxing Club in Woodbury for a boxing class. For Christmas my mom gave me a groupon for 1 month of unlimited classes. Oh man what an amazing workout!!!! The instructors nickname was AKA = Ass Kicking Al!

Saturday evening Scott and I headed to Mark and Sarah’s to see their new place and cook dinner. I made my famously delicious Pasta alla Vodka Sauce.

We planned on only have a couple classes of wine but that turned into a bottle and a half and a shot. So we ended up staying overnight.

I was supposed to start my Advocare 24 Day Challenge Sunday but since I didn’t have my Advocare stuff with me I ended up waiting to start Advocare until Monday.

Sunday morning since I wasn’t starting advocare until Monday we headed to breakfast!!

OMG I had an AMAZING omelet!!!! It’s called the Northern Omelet filled with cream cheese, onion, ham and wild rice! So good!!!!

Sunday after lounging on the couch and grocery shopping Scott and I headed to my parents place to make dinner. I made dinner, of course 🙂

Citrus roasted chicken! I marinaded it with fresh lime, orange and lemon juice.

After dinner we watched some Olympics! Go USA 🙂

Today I started my Advocare 24 Day Challenge! So far it is going great. I’m to shy to post my starting photos but maybe if I see a big difference between my starting photos and my finishing photos I will post them at the end!!

The best thing about Advocare is you eat normal food. The key is clean eating. The only thing you cut out is dairy.

For breakfast I had 2 eggs, 1 piece of whole wheat toast and sliced strawberries.

For lunch I had 1 roasted chicken breast, roasted potatoes and green beans.

Before making dinner I headed to Title for my second boxing class! It was super intense and sweaty and wonderful 🙂

I made Thai Chicken Lettuce Wraps! Oh man were these amazing! I highly recommend them, they were super easy to make which is always a plus! The combo of chicken, cilantro, carrots, pineapple and peanut sauce was awesome.

The rest of my night will be spent doing homework for my 1 class. I currently have an Associate degree so I am going right back into school again to get my 4 year degree!

The Sassy Fit Runner~ Guest Post

Hi everyone! 

Before I introduce myself, I want to give a big THANK YOU to Alex for allowing me to host on her blog today! She is amazing, motivational and inspiring! I am so blessed we had a chance to create a bond over you guested it, running and food!

I grew up very active and I have always enjoyed going to the gym but my journey in running didn’t begin until a year and a half ago, after entering my very first 5K. My husband and I decided to try out our endurance we gain from taking the Insanity Challenge. We each recieved 3rd place in our age groups and of course we became hooked! Now my son who soon will be six, is joining in on all the fun we are discovering in a life of better health and fitness.

We go hiking, biking, on fun runs and when it’s warmer, we also go swimming. Being a wife and a mom is the most important thing to me, and to have their support is truly amazing! Now, I’m only a few more weeks away in becoming a personal trainer! How’s that for a year of life changing goodness?!

HOT CHOCOLATE 15K
 

One of my goals for 2014, was to increase my distance. To keep myself accountable, a few months ago I set out to find a race that would do just that. I signed up for the Hot Chocolate 15K and went ahead and paid in full. I find it’s always best, because not only does it set up a time frame for training, but you never want to throw away good money spent. Last Sunday was the big day to prove I could push myself to the next level. I woke up at 6 am, got dressed and picked up my running buddy. We of course arrived an hour late, but as luck would have it we found our parking lot that was right across from our corral line up (thank goodness I paid extra for the parking pass they offered). The music was lively, the runners we chatted with were friendly and being surrounded by more than 30,000 people is enough to get anyone pumped up! Every mile was a victory. All the volunteers were so enthusiastic and cheering us on, keeping us smiling up every hill. As I approached the last half mile, I gave it everything I had! I knew the race was coming to an end and I wanted to say I finished strong.  Once I crossed over the finish line I became over whelmed with emotions. Joy. Victory. Excitement. I didn’t win a metal; I didn’t even place, but that run was a win because I completed what I set out to do. And it wouldn’t be known as the Sweetest Race in America if is wasn’t for the AMAZING chocolatey goodness we received as our reward! They come to most major cities around the US and they also have a 5k as well. www.hotchocolate15k.com

I PASSED

As many of you know I just graduated from nursing school in December. For the past month I have been doing nothing but working, sleeping, eating, studying…. and maybe a little bit of fun 🙂

Many studying though, especially this last couple weeks!

On Monday afternoon I took the dreaded NCLEX!

The NCLEX is a computer adaptive test so depending on how you are doing you can get anywhere from 75-265 questions. Well NCLEX thought I was so special and that I deserved to experience all 265 questions! Thanks NCLEX. You get 6 hours to take the test and it took me 5 hours and 58 minutes!! I took 2 breaks.

Taking the NCLEX is an emotional roller coaster. I went from feeling confident to thinking I was failing, to feeling confident, to knowing I was failing. It is rough!!!

When I left the testing center I was 98% positive I failed! People who have taken NCLEX warned us that you will feel like you failed after the test. I never realized just how certain you feel about the failing until Monday night.

There is a lovely little trick on the test scheduling website that you can do to see if you passed. (note: it is not proven to work for everyone)

So I went on the website when I got home and tried this trick. I wasn’t really thinking clearly because I didn’t think it would be a good idea to google exactly how to do this trick. I just assumed it was obvious. So I thought I was doing the trick correctly so I thought the scheduling website was letting me schedule to retake my exam. INSTANT tears! Tears for the next 2 okay maybe 3 hours 😦 I was so certain I failed. I text Scott, he was at work, and got him all worried. I told my parents, had them all worried. I even told a few friends that the trick didn’t work for me and that I failed.

Well Scott being how smart he is 🙂 went and actually GOOGLED how to do the trick. He even YouTubed it! He is really smart, this never crossed my mind to try.

So he found my log in info and the scheduling website and went on and tried for himself! He then runs into our bedroom (this is like 3AM) and I had just finally fallen asleep and he woke me up and said Alex I think you passed! You are getting the good pop up. I was being super bitter and I told him to go away! Then I couldn’t fall asleep because I was thinking What pop up? So I googled it on my phone, which is difficult sometimes. I ended up going out in the living room and asking him about this pop up. He then showed me the YouTube videos and logged onto the website and showed me that I was getting the good pop up! INSTANT tears again! I looked at him and said I think I actually passed 🙂

Then I was up all night waiting for my results. Checking results is also confusing. You have to go to the board of nursing website and log in as an applicant, NOT A GUEST (which is what I was doing) and then it shows your results!

Fit Family Lifestyles Month

In honor of Scott and I heading for vacation in SIX days I have a guest post for you all! Kendra Thornton wrote a great article with some tips on how to keep your family happy and healthy while on vacation. There are some great tips for those of you with kiddos.

Five Ways To Keep Your Family Healthy and Happy on Vacation

If you want to look good, you need to feel great! It’s always been a saying that works for me. As a mom to three kids, I have to be active and strong!

There are some valuable tips I’ve picked up over the years that keep me at my best. In honor of this month’s Fit Family Lifestyles, I’m here to share five ways I stay healthy while traveling.

1. Start off the day with a good breakfast

Before you head off to a theme park, beach, day of skiing or whatever it may be with the kids, encourage everyone to eat a balanced breakfast beforehand. It will help you save money during your trip and you’ll be more likely to choose healthier food choices at the beginning of the day. Most hotels include breakfast options in your room rate.

Editors note: I definitely agree with starting your day off with a good breakfast. I’m the worst at eating a nutrition breakfast in the morning (or any breakfast at all) but I feel and eat much better on days that I do eat breakfast. 

2. Take some snacks along with you

Before you head out during the day, plan out a few snacks that will keep your family satisfied. With sliced fruits, pretzels and some homemade trail mix in your bag, it’s easier to keep your kids feeling great before dinnertime. Go on and throw some M&Ms in there just in case you get a craving for something sweet!

3. Recreate their sleeping environment

It’s important for your children to get great sleep while you’re traveling. In order to make your child’s sleep peaceful and sound, recreate their sleeping environment to the best of your ability. Pack their special blanket, sound machine, pacifier or favorite book.

4. Gather souvenirs

Taking trips with your family allows you all to create memories together. During the day, ask your kids to draw or list what their favorite activities were on vacation. Have them collect postcards and souvenirs that mean something to them. This way, they’ll have a collection of mementos to look back on once they’re older. I always like pre-planning to go on active journey’s with my family throughout the day – whether it is sightseeing, a hike, or a walk down the beach because I find that the more active my kids are, the happier they are.

Editors Note: LOVE collecting souvenirs!!!! It’s a great way to remember your vacation. 

5. Keep your hands clean

Keeping your hands washed isn’t just a good habit, it can keep you healthy for weeks to come. According to an SCA survey, four out of 10 adults don’t wash their hands after coughing, sneezing or blowing their nose. Kids have an even harder time keeping sanitized than grownups! Encourage everyone to wash their hands often.

When every family member feels happy and healthy, traveling can be an absolute blast. While you prepare for your trip, keep in mind these great techniques that will make your trip memorable and fantastic.

As you all know I went to a bootcamp and brunch last Saturday. It was so much fun and so great to meet such amazing people who share similar interests as I do! Thanks again Lee, Amanda and Mellissa for a fun morning!

A Killer Workout

I love trying new workouts and this is the one that Lee had us do for our bootcamp. I really enjoyed the workout. It kept my attention and I was never bored. I’m definitely going to be doing this workout on my cruise! Hopefully I can remember all the moves 🙂

Chia Seed Yogurt

Mellissa’s Chia seed yogurt is so good!! I topped mine with some of Scott’s grandma’s homemade peach jam, blueberries and Muesli. It was so good! I need quick and simple breakfast items otherwise I won’t eat breakfast. I know…. I’m bad! But if I prep quick already made things then I eat breakfast!!

Did I ever mention that in High School I used to work at Pei Wei. Oh man if you haven’t tried Pei Wei you NEED to!!! My favorite is the Pei Wei Spicy with Fried Rice and of course I LOVE the wontons and spring rolls!!!!! Not at all healthy (although you can get healthier options there!!) but so so good. It was the perfect fuel to power me through an afternoon of studying.

I was Reunited with Yoga Sculpt

I took my first sculpt class back in October. I really loved it but my month of yoga was up. On Tuesday I headed back to Core Power Yoga for my second sculpt class. I am SO happy I went! It was such a good workout! I missed yoga 🙂

Bark Box for Maisy

So far we love our bark boxes! Maisy has loved everything she has gotten…. she is pretty easy to please though 🙂 Did you know they make beer for dogs?!?

Maisy really loved it. She really really really loved this box because the toy was a rope toy. If you ever want to win Maisy’s heart bring her a rope toy! You will be her new best friend.

Regions ER

Friday I treated myself to a visit to the ER. I know NOT a real treat 🙂 Friday morning while I was doing BodyAttack I all of a sudden felt some bad chest pain when I would inhale. Not going to lie it felt EXACTLY like when I had my Pulmonary Embolism. Since I had just stopped taking my coumadin 5 days early I was worried. Scott was a trooper and took me to the ER and sat with me during my visit, which took FOREVER!!

Good News: No blood clots for me 🙂 Bad but not really that bad news…. Pleurisy! Pleurisy happens when the lining of your lung gets inflamed, then when I took a breath it would rub… hence the extreme pain. It isn’t really known why pleurisy happens… I guess I’m just lucky 🙂 When I woke up saturday morning I felt 100% better!

Bloggers Bootcamp and Brunch

I was so happy to wake up Saturday morning feeling so much better because I was heading to my FIRST blogger meet up! Luck for me the meet up was right across town so I only had a 10 minute drive, which is good because we got LOTS of snow friday night. The bootcamp and brunch was hosted by Lee and Amanda! Thanks again ladies for an awesome get together! One other blogger was able to make it, Mellissa.

We started off with a bootcamp lead by Lee. Lee played awesome music so I didn’t even notice how hard the workout was. No worries the next day I FELT it!! Oh man my legs were so sore!! Thanks for an awesome workout Lee.

After bootcamp we dug into brunch. We had yummy Chia Seed yogurt with strawberries, blueberries and Seven Sundays Muesli. Seven Sundays was super generous and provided us with boxes of Muesli.

Muesli is like a healthier version of granola. It is very good and it is sold in TARGET now!!!

We also had yummy blueberry waffles prepared by Amanda. Not going to lie there is nothing better then a warm blueberry waffle and to make it even better Amanda bought Archer Farms Raspberry Sauce! YUMMY!!!! It was so good. I love brunch!

Double Shift

After brunch with my new Blends I headed home to get ready for work. The hospital was so crazy busy that I offered to work a double. It is always really hard to stay awake overnight but I was working with AMAZING people so it wasn’t to bad. I worked sat 3pm-7am sunday. Another perk of working overnight, we ordered Pizza Luce 🙂

I got The Wrangler. I have an intense love for BBQ pizza and this is one of the bests I’ve had! So good!! I highly recommend eating at Pizza Luce if you have the chance.

More Work

I also worked Sunday and Monday. Things are very crazy around the hospital right now. So many sick babies! Keep your babies away from people with colds!!!

Interview

Monday morning before work I headed to my first nursing interview. It is for a NICU nurse position which is my dream job!!! I really have a passion for taking care of babies. I think the interview went really well! I will find out next week.

Yoga Sculpt

Earlier today I treated myself to some yoga sculpt. What a good workout!! It was lead by Lee and she is intense. The room is HOT you sweat a TON! We did lots of squats. My butt and legs will be cursing you tomorrow Lee 🙂 Lee teaches at Core Power Yoga and The Shed so if you live in the cities you should definitely check out one of her classes!

Congrats Luke & Steph! They got married in Jamaica so Scott & I weren’t able to make it but I got to see tons of pictures!!! I will be doing a post next week dedicated to Steph’s bachelorette party and their wedding 🙂

No More Coumadin

On Monday I met with my doctor to talk about when I could stop taking coumadin. Since all of my labs have come back normal I got the OKAY to stop taking my medicine!! WooHoo!!! Now in a week I go back to the doctor to have more blood drawn and as long as all of those tests come back negative I’m good to go to stay off coumadin!

I Have an Interview

I have an interview on Monday for a NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) Nursing job!!! I’m so excited. The NICU is my passion and ever since I was old enough to know what a nurse was I wanted to work in the NICU as a nurse! I’m so excited to have an interview and really hope I get the job!

After reading about Becky’s amazing results with the Advocare 24 Day Challenge I decided to order it and try it for myself. I am planning on starting it once Scott and I get back from our vacation. I will keep you guys posted on my progress!

Vacation In TWO Weeks

Courtesy of my parents (best graduation present ever!!!) Scott and I are going on a 4 night cruise to the Bahamas! We are heading to Miami, FL Sunday Feb 2nd. We will stay overnight in a hotel Sunday night and then we board the ship Monday. We go to 2 places in the Bahamas and Key West. I am so excited for a vacation. I will keep you guys posted!! BodyPump New Release

I REALLY love the new body pump release! It is so intense. I was able to go twice this week and I was aching everywhere during and after!!!
